Editor's Note
Lydae, also written Lydai, was a town of ancient Caria or Lycia in the Rhodian Peraea, mentioned in ancient sources under names such as Chydae and Clydae. The family of Gaius Iulius Heliodoros, which produced Lycian Federal Priests, an archiphylax, and a Roman Senator, is well documented here, and the communities of Arymaxa and Kreneis merged with the town through sympoliteia. Its site lies on the Kapıdağ Peninsula in the Dalaman district of Muğla and preserves extensive Roman and Byzantine ruins, including a theatre, an agora, and numerous tombs and mausoleums. The site was identified by the British antiquaries Theodore and Mabel Bent in March 1888.
