Editor's Note
Antigoneia was a Hellenistic city founded in 307 BC by Antigonus I Monophthalmus, one of Alexander the Great's successors, on the Orontes River about 7 km northeast of Antioch. Intended as a capital of Antigonus's empire, it occupied a strategic position on trade routes and grew into a large settlement of well over 20,000 people. After Antigonus's death at the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BC, his rival Seleucus I ended the city's prominence by transferring its population to his new foundations at Antioch and Seleucia Pieria. Its exact location is unknown today.
