The Hatay Archaeology Museum in Antakya is known for its extensive collection of Roman and Byzantine era mosaics. Construction began in 1934 on the recommendation of French archaeologist Claude M. Prost, was completed in 1938, and the museum opened to the public in 1948. With 3,500 square metres of mosaics on display, it is claimed to be the largest mosaic museum in the world, and it moved into a much larger newly built premises in 2019. The museum sustained some damage in the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.
