Editor's Note
According to Evliya Celebi's account in his work the Seyahatname (Book of Travels), Iskenderun Castle was built by Alexander the Great with the aim of founding a city around it. In many sources the structure is described as the 'Iskenderun Tower'; Piri Reis also characterized the Iskenderun Tower as a castle, depicting it as a ruined structure standing on a low headland. Like Piri Reis, Evliya Celebi described the structure in the form of a tower, but this tower is not used as a tower in the modern sense. Although architecturally the structure has the character of a castle, it was also used as a harbor.
