Editor's Note
The five-storey tower on the northeastern edge of the walls surrounding the city has a footprint of 16 m by 13 m and stands 23 m tall, and not a single bit of mortar was used in its construction. Each floor is divided into separate sections, and the tower served not only as a residence for the rulers but also as a secure place where the townspeople took refuge in times of danger and where the city treasury was kept safe. From the inscription above the tower door, it is understood that the tower was built by Tarkyares in the second half of the 3rd century BC; after a fire, it was repaired on the orders of the governor Petronius in the early 3rd century AD.
