At the site of Taşucu, at the 10th kilometre of the Silifke-Antalya highway, nothing remains today of the old colony of Holmi founded in the 7th century BC. Holmi survived for a long time but, owing to pirate attacks, began to decline after the 4th century BC. Seleucus Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's commanders and the founder of the Syrian kingdom, took advantage of this weakened state to seize the city easily and resettled its people where Silifke stands today.
