Editor's Note
Dated to the Byzantine period (5th century AD), this large palace was built in the area between the city's two harbours as the residence of the city administrators or the military governor. In Roman Imperial times, this site where the palace stands was occupied by a monumental colonnaded portico overlooking the northern harbour and one of the gates set among the towers of the original city walls. The plan of the two-storey palace was arranged around a central circular portico with ceremonial halls and service areas.
