It lies 10 km from Gülnar, near the village of Tırnak, atop a steep hill on a plateau 750 meters long and 150 meters wide. Because of its position and defensive importance, it was used as a settlement for centuries. Founded by the Luwian royal family in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, the city served as a military and administrative center for the Persians in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, and as a garrison for the Egyptian kings in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.
