Editor's Note
The Kasım Bey Mosque was first built in 1131 by Kasım Bey, chief of the Savcılar tribe (a group belonging to the Danişmentli confederation). Rectangular in plan and oriented east–west, the mosque is divided into three aisles by two rows of arches parallel to the mihrab. The pointed arches forming the aisles are carried by two engaged columns on each side and four free-standing stone columns in the center. The form of each column capital and its decoration differ from one another. Each aisle of the mosque is covered with a wooden-lath ceiling running east–west. On the outside, it is roofed with a gabled roof clad in Marseille tiles. The wooden roof has projecting, overhanging eaves.
