Gebekse church

Story

Set on the yellow-stoned slopes of the Aegean in Marmaris, Muğla, the Gebekse Church tells, through its ruins, a story that stretches from antiquity to the present day. The architectural fragments emerging from stone and earth show how important this sacred place once was. The worn capitals of its columns and its half-standing walls resemble the characteristic churches of the Byzantine period. The most interesting feature of this home of male saints is the sophisticated design of the era's water management system; the channeled systems around the structure are an example of the engineering knowledge of ancient Anatolia. Pottery fragments and inscriptions unearthed in archaeological excavations reveal that this region was an important center of Mediterranean trade. Visiting tip: if you arrive early in the morning, the sun paints the church ruins a gleaming golden hue, turning them into a magnificent work of art for photographers.
