Story
The Ephesus Hellenistic Fountain Structure, in this urban settlement regarded as the ancient heart of Selçuk, beautifully reflects the aesthetics and functionality that water architecture carried. Dating from the 4th century BC, this structure, with its arches built of cut stone blocks, displays the sophisticated urban planning of the Hellenic period. Considering that around 250,000 people lived in ancient Ephesus, one understands how vital such a water system was. What is interesting is that the special stones and ceramics found around the fountain during archaeological excavations show that not only water distribution but also ritual washing and medical practices were carried out here.
