Story
Located on İzmir's Konak waterfront, near the bustling harbor, the Pier Fountain marks the point where İzmir's modernity met Ottoman architecture in the late 19th century. Adorned with elegant marble craftsmanship and neoclassical details, this fountain served many purposes, from the comings and goings of ferries to ships' captains performing their ablutions, and was a lively witness to harbor life. Seen in period photographs standing nobly among the fish market, the porters, and the cargo crates, the fountain evokes İzmir's commercial spirit and multicultural past. Among its interesting details are taps specially designed for Levantine merchants to fill their ships with water, and the year worked into the fountain's stonework. While visiting Konak, be sure to see this fountain near Alsancak's historic buildings and the Kemeraltı Bazaar; the evening hours are recommended, when its marble glows especially beautifully in the low sun.
