Story
Located on the banks of the Meriç River in the İpsala district of Edirne, the "Welcome to Turkey" site is the crossing point for migrants and trade caravans coming from the Balkans to Anatolia. This symbolic gateway served as an important border control station of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th century onward. Beneath the green river waters and the view of the Balkan mountains, visitors come to this historic site that embodies the meaning of where East and West intersect. An important tax and trade center during the Ottoman era, this region has retained its strategic value even after the Battle of Gallipoli. On a walk along the Meriç River you can discover the natural beauty and go bird watching.
