Story

Located in the İhsaniye district of Afyonkarahisar, the Byzantine Rock Dwellings have survived to this day as silent witnesses to stonework that spans centuries. Bearing the architectural and everyday traces of the Byzantine period (6th-15th centuries), these dwellings, with rooms, sleeping niches, and storage areas carved into the rock formations, partly reveal the settlement and defense strategies of the era. Thanks to Afyon's geological structure, the inhabitants skillfully shaped these rocks, which had eroded naturally over time. The most intriguing historical detail: these dwellings were not only living spaces but may also have served as observation points and refuges within the Byzantine defensive system. The settlement's position in the region was also strategic for controlling trade routes. Entering these rock dwellings, visitors sense, in the dry and cool air, just how functional these spaces were during the Byzantine period. It is recommended to arrange in advance with İhsaniye's local guides so the dwellings can be explored as safely as possible.
