One of the iconic structures of Fethiye, the Telmessos Rock Tombs are priceless works that engraved the Lycian civilization's belief in immortality onto stone two thousand years ago. Skillfully carved into the high cliffs and adorned with Ionic capitals, their facades reveal the social status of the wealthy families of antiquity. The columned entrance sections of each tomb and their geometric patterns display the elegant meeting of Eastern art and Western architecture. According to Lycian belief, the soul wished to remain close to its family at the moment of death, so they had their tombs built into these high cliffs that watch over the city where they lived. On the walls of the chambers carved within, ancient inscriptions and symbols can still be made out. If you choose the early morning hours during your visit, you can see the details of these stone works much more clearly and enchantingly under the sunlight striking the cliffs.
