Story
One of Cappadocia's most striking archaeological sites, the Zelve Open-Air Museum preserves and presents a unique heritage carved over thousands of years from soft pink tuff. Flourishing under a succession of rulers from the Hittite era to the Ottoman age, the region holds some of the finest examples of stonework, especially from the Byzantine period. Visitors wandering through the museum can explore ancient temple ruins of UNESCO World Heritage status, lived-in cave dwellings, and centers of worship; studying the exquisite frescoes of the Kızıl Kilise (Red Church) and Uzunçarşı Church, carved into the honey-colored rock, is particularly captivating. Zelve's labyrinthine underground tunnel networks once served for protection and storage in antiquity, and today they form one of Turkey's most important open-air archaeological museums. On your visit, trace the legacy of Hittite and Byzantine architecture with the on-site guides, and come early in the day to catch the pink tuff at its loveliest in the morning light.
