Editor's Note
The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, also known as the Second Bosphorus Bridge, spans the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, connecting Asia and Europe between Kavacık and Hisarüstü. It is named after the 15th-century Ottoman sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, who took Constantinople in 1453. With a main span of 1,090 metres, it was the world's fifth-longest suspension-bridge span when completed; its foundation was laid in 1985 and it opened on 3 July 1988.
