Editor's Note
The Kavak İskele Mosque, located in Üsküdar Selimiye within the bounds of Haydarpaşa Harbor, was built in 1666 by Lala Beşir Ağa, treasurer of Sultan Mehmed IV. The mosque suffered major destruction twice in its history. First, during the Crimean War of 1855, it was used as a depot by British soldiers, damaged, and burned. Sultan Abdülhamid then had it rebuilt in 1885, but in later years it fell within a military zone and turned to ruin; its minaret was demolished in 1939 and the rest in 1959.
