Editor's Note
"… A monument was erected on the island to the Russian soldiers who died in the Ottoman-Russian War (1828-29). The monument, which later remained in the garden of the building of the Naval Machinery Class Schools, was a marble angel holding the emblem of the tsars, surrounded by iron railings, and on its base the figures 1828-1829 were written in Latin letters. On one side were inscriptions in Russian, on the other in Greek. The Greek text read: '1828-1829. Thirteen hundred holy Russian soldiers, we were taken captive by the Turks and buried in this soil. The Great Emperor erected this monument in memory of the great service and heroism of his soldiers.'"
