Editor's Note
The Monastery of John the Baptist (Hagios Ioannis Prodromos) stood at the very centre of the island, on the western slope of Değirmen Tepesi (Mill Hill). The area now lies within the grounds of the Turkish Naval High School and can only be visited with special permission. Although the founding date of the original monastery is unknown, it is thought to have probably been built in the Byzantine period. Of the monastery, demolished in 1672, only the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Theotokos (the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Kamariotissa, the Lady of the Columns) remains standing.
