Editor's Note
This is an Eastern Roman (Byzantine) cistern whose remains can be seen in the lobby of the Eresin Hotel in the Küçük Ayasofya neighborhood. It dates to around the 5th–6th centuries, and because it lies within the grounds of the Great Palace Complex, abundant mosaics were also found around it. These mosaics and architectural fragments from the same period are exhibited in the hotel lobby. At the same time, stelae from the 2nd–3rd centuries BCE found at the site point to the existence of a necropolis in this area during the Hellenistic period. The remains may be viewed with the hotel's permission.
