Editor's Note
This is a monastery carved into the rock in the town of Kıyıköy (formerly known as Midye). The monastery consists of three parts: a church hewn into the rock mass, a sacred spring (ayazma) where water considered holy flows from within the rock, and two chambers adjoining the narthex of the church. There was once an additional section built of stone and brick in front of the structure, thought to date from the 19th century, but it has not survived. The fact that this added section does not appear in the sketch drawn by the French traveller Xavier Hommaire de Hell, who visited in 1846, confirms this estimate.
