Editor's Note
In 1915, the enemy states attacking Çanakkale by sea attacked İzmir in March 1915 to prevent the Gulf of İzmir from becoming a naval base for the Germans. This attack was met with defensive fire from the gun batteries at Menteş (Çeşmealtı), Kilizman (Güzelbahçe), Abdullahağa Çiftliği (Narlıdere Engineering School), Bademlik (Sahilevleri) and Yenikale (İnciraltı). It was these batteries that caused the British ship HMS 30 to sink on 13 May 1915, and the French cruiser Casabianca to strike our sea mines and sink on 3 June 1915 while manoeuvring to avoid the gunfire.
