Editor's Note
Founded on the edge of a large bay, Antiphellos was the harbor of Phellos. After Phellos lost its importance in the Hellenistic period, Antiphellos grew and developed into a significant port city and became one of the leading cities of Lycia. Pliny reports that the city's earliest name was Habessos and notes the quality of its sponges. Continuing to flourish in the Roman period, the city became an important trade port from which cedar timber from the region's forests was shipped and where sponges were produced.
