Atatürk's mausoleum quoting nineteen centuries of Anatolian architecture in a single processional avenue.
Story
Atatürk's mausoleum sits on Anıttepe, an artificial hill west of central Ankara. The architects Emin Onat and Orhan Arda spent 1944-1953 quoting nineteen centuries of Anatolian architecture — Hittite lions, Seljuk vaults, Ottoman tile — in one continuous processional avenue. The route from the Lion Road to the great hall is choreographed to slow you down.
Did you know
- The 24 Hittite-style lion sculptures along the entrance avenue stand for the 24 Oğuz tribes.
- The sarcophagus you see is symbolic; Atatürk's actual tomb is in a chamber below.
- A separate hall opposite his tomb holds İsmet İnönü, Turkey's second president.
